As the moving scroll cycles in an elliptical motion, the space (volume) between the rotating scroll and the fixed scroll (compressor body) gradually decreases, forcing the gaseous refrigerant towards the centre discharge port. Therefore, the refrigerant drawn in through the suction port is compressed due to the elliptical motion of the moving scroll.
This compressor design provides as almost constant discharge volume and eliminates much of the pulsation in the refrigerant gas that is inherent with conventional piston type compressor designs.
