| The brush is held against the commutator by a spring. If the brush length exceeds the specified wear limit, the holding force of the spring will decrease, and contact with the commutator will become insufficient. As this conditon prevents smooth flow of the electric current, the starter turn may be disabled. |

| Clean the brush and measure the brush
length with vernier calipers. |

Measure the brush length at the middle of the brush (lowest wear point), using the tips of the vernier caliper jaws for greater accuracy. |
