Diodes are solid state electronic devices that function to allow electrical current flow in one direction only. Their function can be compared to a mechanical valve or gate that only allows for movement past it one way. Diodes are manufactured from various types of semiconductor material however they all consist of n-type and p-type material with a common connection point. There are several types of diodes used in different electronic applications such as Zener diodes, LED (Light-Emitting Diodes) and Photodiodes however we will just consider the ordinary rectifying diode in this study of alternators. The diagrams show how an electrical current flows through a diode.
