Before disassembling the output shaft, use either a thickness gauge or a dial gauge to measure the gear clearance.
 
1. 1st gear clearance
 
2. 2nd gear clearance
  (1) Use a dial gauge to measure the thrust clearance.
  (2) Use a dial gauge to measure radial clearance between the gear and shaft.
 
HINT:
If there is not enough gear clearance, the gears will not be lubricated properly; likewise, if the clearance is too large, the gears will not engage properly and the unit will generate abnormal noise.
