Inspect Gear and Shaft

Caliper gauge
5th gear
Reverse idler gear

The gear is attached to the shaft via the bearing. When the inner diameter of the gear and the outer diameter of the shaft are worn, the radial clearance is increased. This makes it difficult for the gear to be properly engaged and will cause an abnormal noise.

1.
Visually inspect 5th gear and reverse idle gear
(1) Verify whether there are any scratches or physical damage on the contact surfaces of the gear spline and shaft.

(2) Verify whether there is any change of colour where the gear cone and the synchronizer ring come in contact.

2.
Measure inner diameter of 5th gear and reverse idle gear
Use a caliper gauge to measure the inner diameter of the gear over several locations.
