While the engine cranks

| When the clutch gear (outer) revolves faster than the spline shaft (inner), the clutch rollers are forced into the narrower section of the clutch gear, allowing the revolving force of the clutch gear to be transmitted to the spline shaft. |

After the engine starts

| When the spline shaft (inner) revolves faster than the clutch gear (outer), the clutch rollers are forced into the wider section of the clutch gear, disconnecting the clutch gear (outer), and preventing any drive force being transmitted from the spline shaft (inner) to the clutch gear (outer). |
