<2> Hold-in
When the main contacts engage, current no longer flows through the pull-in coil, and the field coil and the armature coil receive current directly from the battery. The armature then starts to revolve at high-speed, and the engine cranks. At this time, the plunger is only held in position by the magnetic force exerted by the hold-in coil because no current is flowing through the pull-in coil.
