The brush lead consists of 2 groups;
one is connected to the lead wire (group A) and the other is connected to the
starter yoke (group B).

Check continuity in the lead wire
and all the brush leads. The 2 brush leads which have continuity belong to group
A and the 2 brush leads which have no continuity belong to group B.

Checking continuity between
the brush lead and the lead wire will help to determine whether
a open-circuit has occurred in the field coil.
•
Checking insulation between
the brush lead and the starter yoke will help to determine whether
a short-circuit has occurred in the field coil.
