The alternator rotor is driven by the vehicles’ engine and, while driving, the engine speed frequently changes, causing the alternator speed to change in a similar manner. If the alternator had no regulator, the charging system could not supply a constant amount of electricity to the electric devices on the vehicle.
Regardless of the alternator speed changes, the voltage applied to the electric devices should be maintained at a constant level, and the output to supply the required amount should always be regulated. This regulation is conducted within the alternator by the IC regulator.
