Principle of the Alternator

(3) To generate electricity more efficiently, the vehicle alternator uses three coils arranged as shown in the figure.
(4) Each coil, A, B, and C, is spaced 120° apart. When the magnet (rotor) is rotated among them, alternating current is generated in each coil. The figure shows the relation between the three sets of alternating current and the magnet. Electricity generated from three sets of alternating current like this is referred to as “three-phase alternating current”. All modern vehicle alternators generate three-phase alternating current.
