| Using vernier calipers, measure
the length of the brush. |

Measure the brush length at the middle of the brush (lowest wear point), using the tips of the vernier caliper jaws for greater accuracy. |

The slip ring and brushes are in constant contact to allow the generated current to flow to the rectifier..
For this reason if the brush length becomes shorter than the specified wear limit, contact with the slip ring will be reduced, which will cause a reduction of current flow. As a result, alternator output will be reduced or result in a complete alternator failure. |

If the measurement value is below the standard, replace the brush holder assembly. |
