Inspect Differential Side Gear Backlash
Dial gauge
Side gear
Aluminium plate
 
To turn the gear smoothly, there is a gap between the gear teeth called backlash.
Before disassembling the differential case, measure the backlash using a dial gauge.
 
Measure backlash
Hold the differential case in a vise between aluminium plates.
Then measure the backlash.
 
NOTICE:
Do not tighten the vise excessively.
 
HINT:
Refer to this measured value when adjusting the backlash following the reassembly of the differential case.
