| The gears are mounted on the output shaft journal
via the bearing. When the shaft runout increases, the outer diameter of the journal
decreases through wear. This makes it difficult for the gear to be properly engaged
and will cause an abnormal noise. In extreme circumstances, the gears will be
damaged. |

| 1. |
Visually inspect each journal |
| Check for scratches or damage and check that there
is no discoloration. |
| |
| 2. |
Measure runout |
| Set the shaft on V-blocks. Then use a dial gauge
to measure the shaft runout as the shaft rotates. |
