Outline of Clutch.

The clutch uses friction between the flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate to transmit torque. The clutch disc is clamped by spring force on the pressure plate onto the flywheel. This clamping force can be released or applied by operating the clutch pedal to allow the clutch to be engaged and disengaged. Hydraulic pressure applied to a slave cylinder is used to move the release fork and disengage the clutch. .

There are also cable type clutches that connect the clutch pedal and the release fork by cable.
