The magnetic switch has two functions.

| Also, the magnetic switch operates in three steps when the starter is operated. |

If an open circuit occurs in the pull-in coil, it cannot pull in the plunger resulting in a symptom where the starter will not function (no operational sound from the magnetic switch). |

If the main contacts have poor contact, insufficient current will flow to the field coils and the armature coil, and the starter revolutions decrease. |
 |
If an open circuit occurs in the hold-in coil, it cannot hold in the plunger resulting in the plunger repeatedly “popping” in and out. |
